Is SPIRIVA right for you?

If you have COPD, ask your doctor if SPIRIVA may be the right treatment for you. COPD includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. And SPIRIVA treats both these conditions by opening narrowed airways. Unlike other COPD medicines, SPIRIVA works for a full 24 hours with just one inhaled dose. So SPIRIVA helps you breathe better all day, every day.

SPIRIVA HandiHaler

The side effects of SPIRIVA

The safety profile of SPIRIVA has been established in large clinical studies and with millions of people taking SPIRIVA worldwide. In clinical trials, the most common side effect with SPIRIVA was dry mouth, reported by less than 2 out of 10 patients. Very few patients stopped taking SPIRIVA because of dry mouth.

Some side effects seen with ipratropium-containing drugs (such as ATROVENT and COMBIVENT) were also seen with SPIRIVA. These include constipation, increased heart rate, blurry vision, glaucoma, and trouble passing urine. For a complete list of reported side effects, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

SPIRIVA can be used with some other COPD medicines

Many people with COPD take more than one type of medicine to treat it. SPIRIVA can be used alone or in combination with many other COPD medicines. SPIRIVA was studied with other commonly used COPD therapies.

These include certain short-acting "rescue" inhalers, long- and short-acting beta agonists, theophylline, and oral and inhaled steroids. SPIRIVA has not been studied with either ATROVENT Inhalation Aerosol or COMBIVENT Inhalation Aerosol, and, therefore, it is not recommended to use SPIRIVA with these medications. Check with your doctor to see if SPIRIVA is right for you.

Always make sure your doctor knows all the medicines that you are taking, including over-the-counter remedies. Only your doctor can say for sure whether you can use SPIRIVA while taking another medicine.

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. either owns or uses under license the SPIRIVA HandiHaler, ATROVENT, and COMBIVENT trademarks.
