Open the HandiHaler and the blister

Open Open the dust cap of the HandiHaler by pressing the green piercing button.
Open Pull the dust cap upwards to expose the mouthpiece.
Open

Open the mouthpiece by pulling the mouthpiece ridge upwards.

Open Next, separate one of the blisters from the blister card by tearing along the perforation.
Open To open the blister, start from the corner tab and carefully peel back the aluminum foil where indicated by an arrow. Continue peeling back the foil until the capsule is fully visible. Turn the blister upside down and tip the capsule out, tapping the back of the blister if necessary.

Capsules should always be stored in the sealed blisters and only removed immediately before use. Do not store capsules in the HandiHaler device. The drug should be used immediately after the packaging of an individual capsule is opened, or else its effectiveness may be reduced.

DO NOT CUT THE FOIL OR USE SHARP INSTRUMENTS TO REMOVE THE CAPSULE FROM THE BLISTER, AND DO NOT PUSH THE CAPSULE OUT OF THE BLISTER THROUGH THE ALUMINUM FOIL.

If additional capsules are exposed to the air, they should not be used and should be discarded.

Inhale your medicine

Inhale To inhale your medicine with the HandiHaler:
  • Hold the HandiHaler device by the gray base, being careful not to block the air intake vents.
  • Raise the HandiHaler device to your mouth and close your lips tightly around the mouthpiece.
  • Keep your head upright and breathe in slowly and deeply but at a rate sufficient to hear or feel the capsule vibrate.
  • Breathe in until your lungs are full.
  • Hold your breath as long as is comfortable while removing the HandiHaler from your mouth. Resume normal breathing.

To ensure that you get the full dose of SPIRIVA, breathe out completely and inhale your medicine one more time as described above.

If you do not hear or feel the capsule vibrate, tap the HandiHaler gently on a table, holding it in an upright position. Check to see that the mouthpiece is completely closed. Then breathe in again — slowly and deeply. If you still do not hear or feel the capsule vibrate after repeating the steps above, please consult your physician.

Press

After you have finished taking your daily dose of SPIRIVA, open the mouthpiece again. Tip out the used capsule and discard.

Press Close the mouthpiece and dust cap to store your HandiHaler device until the next dose.
